La forêt amazonienne est la plus grande forêt tropicale sur terre. Elle s’étend sur près de 5,5 millions de km2 et elle est située dans le bassin amazonien, entre le Brésil, le Pérou, l’Équateur, le Venezuela et la Colombie. La forêt amazonienne contient à elle seule environ 10 % des espèces connues dans le monde. Elle est plus grande que les deux plus grandes forêts tropicales suivantes - dans le bassin du Congo et en Indonésie - réunies.
